The Turning Point
By: Justin Zhang
The chill was tingling in my bones. I, James Brown am 18 years old from the 10th regiment of Wisconsin. We were about to march to a battle in Gettysburg. I was scared, but I had to prove to my side, the union, my best friend Charles Smith who was also 18 years old, and everyone that I was a man.
“And stop!” Ulysses S. Grant yelled.
“Now what?” I moaned.
“Shut up private Brown! I stopped all of you soldiers because when we march into battle, it’s fighting for pride or death!”
“Fine!” I yelled.
“Chill out James.” Charles sighed.
It was July 1, 1863, 9:03 am. Now we were actually marching into battle.
“Are you ok James? You look really terrified.” Charles asked.
“Yeah… I’m fine.” I was actually not fine at all. This would be my first bloody battle in my life, but this could also be my last. My heart was beating so rapidly that it almost exploded out of my chest. I was scared. Very scared.
“Step, step, stop, step, step, stop.”
“General, I see them!” I shouted.
“I see them too. Men, this is pride or death! Start digging up some trenches now! Fast!” Ulysses shouted.
12:01 am.
“Their coming gene-” I muttered.
“SHHH!!!” Ulysses hissed. We were all hiding in the trenched. When every second past, the grasp in my chest tightened. 1 minute passed. 5 minutes passed. 15 minutes passed.
“Let me check.” A random soldier noted. The random soldier climbed up the ladder to scout for the Confederates.
“Stop!” Charles and I screamed. It was too late. While we were trying to warn the soldier, his head popped out of the trench and got shot and killed by a confederate.
Blood was everywhere on the bottom of the trench. Everyone was scared and shocked.
“Listen up soldiers! If the confederates are targeting the front of the trenches, we still have 3 other exits. The 2 sides and the back.” Ulysses whispered.
When all of us got out of the trenches, the confederates bombed our trenches.
“Good thing we left before everyone's face got blown up. Now what?” I questioned.
“We fight.’ Charles answered.
“Boom! Bang! Boom! Bang!” The battle actually began.
“I’m scared,” I mumbled.
“Don’t be,” Charles whispered.
“Ok soldiers, on the count of 3 we fight!” Ulysses shouted.
“1! 2! 3!!!”
We were shooting our rifles at the Confederates while the cavalry on horseback charged at the Confederates with sharp swords.
“Bang! Pow!”
“I shot one! I shot one!” I yelled.
“James, watch out!” Charles screamed. Charles was right. One of the confederates was aiming his brown and shiny rifle right towards me.
“BANG!” He shot the gun. Suddenly, Charles jumped in front of me and took the shot to his leg.
“Uhhh….” Charles moaned.
“DOCTOR! DOCTOR! MEDIC! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!” I Screamed.
“Where am I?” Charles sighed.
“In the hospital son.” The doctor responded.
“Your friend James told me to tell you that he is very thankful that you took the bullet for him. Then you fainted, so James carried you to here. Then I took care of you from there.”
“Thank you. And tell James that I thank him.”
“James also told me to tell you that he thanks you very much because you saved his life.”
“That was no biggie.” Charles laughed.
Later in the hospital.
“There you go. I took the bullet out from your leg and I put some bandages around it. You should be fine to go now.”
“Ok and thank you.”
“Charles!!!” I screamed.
“Hi, James. Thank you for saving my life.”
“No, thank you.”
“Well whatever, let’s get back into the battle again,” Charles advised.
“Ok.”
“Bang! Bang! Pow! Pow!”
“OW!!!” A random soldier screamed.
“There's blood everywhere,” I exclaimed.
“Yeah, there sure is,” Charles stated.
After a day of fighting, everyone was tired and exhausted.
“How many men did we lose?” Ulysses asked.
“Let me check,” I replied.
“About 5000,” I answered.
“Oh,” Ulysses responded.
“You all get a good night rest and tomorrow, we will fight again.” Man, I was tired. So many things happened today. I almost died, but Charles saved my life by taking the bullet for me, and everything today was just crazy.
6:03 am.
“Wake up soldiers!” Ulysses hollered.
“Already?” I questioned.
“If we don’t go now, the Confederates would kill us in a glance,” Ulysses responded.
“Fine,” I grumbled.
“CHARGE!” The confederates roared.
“Men! When I say fire, we fire!” Ulysses yelled.
“Wait for it.”
“Almost.”
“NOW! FIRE!!!”
“BANG! CRACK! POW! BANG! BANG! POW! CRACK!”
“Um… General, I think we killed them all.”
“We sure did,” Ulysses replied.
During the night.
“Good job men. Today was a victory for us, but we shouldn't celebrate yet.”
“Why General?” Everyone asked.
“Because I know for sure that tomorrow, the Confederates will send even more troops than ever just for victory, but if we don’t give up we still have a chance. Who’s in this with me?”
“Me!”
“Me!”
“Me!”
“Me!”
“Who’s in this again?” Ulysses asked.
“ME!!!!!” Everyone screamed.
“That's what I’m talking about.” Ulysses laughed.
5:41 am.
“Same plan?” I asked.
“Yes,” Ulysses responded. Today, we woke up extra early.
“Men! Same thing as yesterday!”
“Ok.” Everyone commented.
30 minutes passed.
“Where could they be?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” Ulysses claimed.
“BANG! POW! BANG! POW !”
“WATCH OUT!!! DUCK!!!” Ulysses shouted.
Man, oh man. The confederates outsmarted us. Instead of them just stupid by being killed for free by us, they sneaked up to us from the back and killed a lot of us.
“BANG! POW! CRACK!”
“This was I bad idea,” I mumbled.
“It was,” Ulysses responded.
“Well, we fight till the battle is over.” I sighed.
“CHARGE!” I screamed. I never had been this brave in my life. I shot everyone in my sight. Suddenly, everyone stopped.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“JAMES!!! YOU DID IT!!!” Everyone screamed.
“Did What?”
“You killed all of their generals!!!”
“Oh…. that’s why they're holding up a white flag.” I giggled.
“Great job James,” Ulysses stated.
“No Problem,” I replied.
The sun went down while I was laying in my bed. It was quiet. Super quiet. No more bombs, gunshots, or anything. Everything was fine. Perfect. I did it. I killed the generals. We won.
